UWI,Cave HillMinister of Education Ronald Jones has maintained that Government’s tertiary education tuition fee policy was necessary or the number of students would have had to be restricted because […] the Freundel Stuart administration simply could not continue to heavily subsidize education while supporting other services – Barbados Today

In his column “Fighting Goliath” on page 16 of the same issue David Comissiong states: “The latest ‘political crime’ of the current DLP Government has been the imposition of tuition fees on students of the Barbados Community College (BCC).”

First of all, Mr. Minister of Education: What is a “definitive fact”?

If the reason for not allowing the scions of the poor, the needy, the vulnerable – and more and more the so-called middle class – a free education is the economy, why don’t you and your colleagues, especially the Minister of Finance, use the taxes which we are paying for funding the education, health, and welfare services of our country instead of giving them to entities such as Sandals and Cahill Energy?

You can give such entities millions of tax rebates, but you say that there is a “low cash flow” when it has anything to do with the necessities of the populace of this country. Home drums should always beat first. The Minister of Finance has not only our taxes to give away, but our land and water also! How many of the taxpayers of this country cannot even get one of the Government houses or apartments, far less a plot of land?

There was the case where people had paid Government for plots of land, and Government confiscated their land to give it to someone else.

We have the poor, the needy and the vulnerable – not forgetting those in St. Andrew and St. Joseph who do not see water very often, but still receive horrendous bills for water – whose water is cut off as soon as they go into arrears, but the Minister of Finance and the other magnificent three have the gall to give away not only our water to some Johnny-come-lately company, along with the rights to drill for water on the free land which it is receiving, whenever it likes, but our land as if it is his!

Thirty years of water FREE!

We have a weak economy, and instead of putting our taxes to proper use, the magnificent four can give away our taxes as they like, whereas the scions of the said taxpayers who are being fleeced must now pay not only to go to UWI, but to BCC!

Pray tell me, Messieurs Ministers, what else will you demolish or leave in disrepair, while the Minister of Finance complains of a “cash flow”?

There may be a low cash flow, but in the wrong direction!

It is being given to companies like Cahill Energy and Sandals!

No wonder Cahill Energy chose Barbados!

Who would turn down the sweetest sweetheart deal of which he/she has ever heard?

Does our Psychiatric Hospital look like somewhere to put people into?

What about the QEH? Is that still functioning as it should after its funding has been drastically reduced?

How about the equipment for it?

Is it still lacking?

Are the nurses working proper hours?

Education needs money.

Welfare needs money.

The Health Department needs money.

The Child Care Board needs money.

The Minister of Finance says he has none for these important planks of our society, but he has hundreds of millions of our tax dollars for foreign entities.

What deal did you give the Pure Hotel and Spa which is now putting nine six-storey buildings on the promontory overlooking Foul Bay and which will destroy the beautiful view not only for the residents, but those passing through?

This shows utter contempt for the populace of this country!

This also means that another popular beach will be no longer be available to residents and those tourists who drive around the island – whether by bus, hired car or taxi.

Nothing is being left intact for our progeny and their progeny.

Yet, this is a “people-centred Government”.

This burden must be borne by those who are not born yet, and do not even know about the inheritance they will receive.

It seems that your favourite slogan: “Our children are our future” no longer obtains!

My motto is: “Beware of gift-bringing Greeks!”

  1. Things being said on Brasstacks sure are getting to the Dems…………….one dem after each other today………….For Frank Alleyne to come out is serious……….an arrogant obnoxious character………..now David Ellis is cowarding to him……….

  2. Hear Sir Frank………..people calling the programme speaking on the economy do not know what they are talking…………………….

………..News Flash, Sir Frank…..you have been Stinkliar’s chief advisor for the longest time and look where the economy is today………in tatters going off the cliff. The “Statsman” makes more sense to me than the likes of you, Sir Frank!

  3. Artax

It is funny how you and others of your sort can besmear the character as well as befoul the academic-stance of those people who do not particularly share your political -worldview, and when these persons respond in language which affronts the moral decorum of the blog. You somehow appeal to the blogmaster and summons him to censor these persons as those you’re devoid of culpability.

Now Just to respond to your question regarding my military experience, which by the way I found quite funny and rather amusing. Why should I give of my military experience to help improve military operations at the Barbados Defence Force, when personnel of the Defence Force are trained by American Special Operations? So I hardly think that my antiquated military experience would be of any meaningful value to the Barbados Defence.

    An excellent point, Prodigal.

So, is Sir Frank Alleyne implying that Ryan Straughan; Jeremy Stephen; Dr. Clyde Mascoll; RBC Financial (Caribbean) Limited’s group economist, Marla Dukharan do NOT know what they are talking?

Perhaps Dr. Alleyne holds a similar view when Dr. David Estwick opined that the DLP was to be blamed for the recent state of Barbados’s economy. Remember Estwick’s “revelation?”:

“WE’RE TO BLAME. That was the admission of embattled Minister of Agriculture Dr David Estwick to Prime Minister Freundel Stuart when he addressed his boss and fellow Cabinet colleagues at Government Headquarters yesterday. It was the opportunity he had insisted on having and he took his time to detail the mistakes made by the present Government. Estwick observed that the pet Democratic Labour Party (DLP) social projects – free bus rides for schoolchildren, summer camps and the creation of Constituency Councils – “should not be introduced when your revenue is declining and you have no way of knowing the duration of the recession”. He rejected the lay-off of civil servants as a method of saving the economy, saying: “Prime Minister, retrenchment is not a policy! It is an action of last resort because of failed policies.” [Nation News.com, February, 2014]

Has Dr. Alleyne express similar sentiments when Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Delisle Worrell, revealed government’s Medium Term Fiscal and Medium Tern Development Strategies had failed to achieve their intended objectives?

I am sorry but I cannot join you in your attacks on Dr. Frank Alleyne. I think that I should remind you of an old saying: wuh ain’t ketch you ain’t pass you. He is at a point that we all should fear; he has lost most if not all of his marbles. Dementia is not a laughing matter. That once brilliant mind could not now pass the Common Entrance Examination. So give him a break when he speaks out during his lucid moments. Be kind to him gentlemen.

If you are going to pity anyone, save it for Sinckler because Sir Frank’s dying brain is somehow still better than Sinckler’s healthy one.

  6. If Dompey served in the US military he is in good company.John McCain graduated from West Point 894th out of a class of 899.He was a POW in ‘nam for almost all of his time there.Trump was on good ground when he referred to this “Vietnam Vet”,claiming he spent his time in cushy protected surroundings because of his paternal connections.
    Dompey is in good company.

  7. Frank Alleyne was lecturing to a class in EC 101 in the law lecture theatre. The lights went out and the class continued in the car park.I recall him saying to the class that if anyone wanted to waste time studying, they can study National Accounting.
Lo and behold, the first question on the paper, and compulsory, was in National Accounting and it carried 45 marks.I didn’t follow his advice, thank goodness.

  8. Dr Keith Rowley,PM of TnT, in his inaugural speech at Queens Hall,Trinidad, made mention of the lasting impression his former principal of Bishop’s High School,Tobago, barbadian Eugene Blackett, has had on moulding his character.
Blackett, excelling in academics, athletics and the cadet corps, went on to earn a Masters in Classics at Codrington College/Durham and a Certificate in Education from Cambridge UK and is still very active in his adopted homeland Tobago at the ripe age of 97.

  9. Gabriel

First and foremost, John McCain never attended West Point as you have so mistakenly assumed.

Secondly, John McCain attended United States Naval Academy; he was a naval pilot.

Thirdly, if you knew anything at all about the US Military Schools, you was have known that West Point is an infantry oriented academy.

  10. Re McCain…Errata et addenda
He graduated fifth from the bottom of the class of 899 from the Naval Academy at Annapolis. His POW location was known as the Hanoi Hilton.Enough to confirm you are in good company,a dunce and an impostor.

  11. Gabriel

Perhaps John McCain did graduated at the bottom of his class at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, but that still doesn’t change the fact that West Point is located in New York.

  12. We read in today’s press the St. John Polyclinic is scheduled to open November 30, 2015.

  13. @ Artaxerxes September 14, 2015 at 4:09 PM

    Excellent post.

  14. Gabriel,

I am so happy that Dr Rowley found a position in which he could utilise the services of Brian Lara.

Has Kamla filed her law suit yet?

I watched the Prime Minister of Barbados tonight on DLPTV and can only say ……………someday you will be gone just like Kamla!

  15. David,

We will wait and see. And all the tax refunds were to be refunded by September……….one does not believe a word out of the DLP’s mouth!

  16. Does anyone on BU know if any student received a bursary this year as promised by this joker we call Ronald Jones?

  17. @Prodigal

BU is aware of one case.

Trump like you yourself are ignorant of American Military history and I am going to prove it to you Gabriel.

Have you every heard the name General George Armstrong Custer? Well, take note because Custer graduated last in his class at West Point; feel free to read his autobiography if you so much desire to do so sir.

And to this this day, Custer is still regarded as the great as well as the younger general to date in the United States Military history.

So you as well as your friend Donald Trump, argument falls flat of it face because Custer’s performance in battle as well as McCain’s has little or no bearing on their place of graduation.

  19. Which battle? You mean the one at the Little Bighorn? Custer got himself and his troops killed. Custer is a propaganda hero only.

Just like McCain, every medal you can think about, yet Trump mocking the guy.Hero? What hero. There are those who think it was a set up in ‘nam to save the guy’s hide.McCain and George Bush have a lot in common.Less than normal brain matter, big on delusional politics aided by the likes of Cheney and Karl Rove, another maverick who Trump beat up on this evening in Dallas.

  21. Caswell Franklyn

Custer is a proganda hero … it that what their taught you in school Caswell? People who fought with and along side Custer told the story of his courage and military tactics so, you can keeping on believe your lie Caswell. So what if he got his men killed … I never said he was God. That’s the price men pay when their put on the uniform and face their foes with courage and the intesticular fortitude.

  22. Gabriel

Donald Trump never once put on the uniform and serve his country in any capacity whatsoever, so he should be ashame to challenge McCain’s military record.

Trump hadn’ t the courage like McCain to go off to war and serve his country honourably, instead Trump dodgered draft like his buddy George W.Bush.

  23. @ Dompey
…but were you not posted as a kitchen assistant…?
What the hell do you know about it?
In fact, were you not discharged for persistently mis-peeling potatoes…?

De Ole Man up, hiding from “wunna dun know who…” and heah having a good laugh at this tango with dufus or what could easily, in the classic stead of that movie “Dancing with Wolves” starring Kevin Costner renamed now “Dancing with the Mules” starring Donkey

On a more serious note (and in an effort to adhere to the Blogmaster’s hint about topics (smile)) I said that I would post this article to show how serious people think and act insofar as Education and its promotion are concerned

“From now until October 7, Khan Academy and Breakthrough Prize are seeking video submissions that explain a challenging and important concept or theory in mathematics, life sciences, or physics. If you’re between 13 and 18, and you have a passion for explaining ideas and concepts creatively, you can enter the Breakthrough Junior Challenge!”

    BETWEEN 13 AND 18!!!

“Not only can you dig into a topic that you’re passionate about, but there are also great prizes to be won, including a $250,000 scholarship for you, a $50,000 award for your teacher, and a state-of-the-art $100,000 science lab for your school. The winner will also be invited California, where the prize will be awarded in front of the superstars of science, Silicon Valley, and Hollywood.”

    US$250,000 for a SCHOLARSHIP

US$50,000 for YOU TEACHER (the Children are is learning well!!)

    US$100,000 for YOU SCHOOL!!

Wunna unnerstand why de ole man does tek dem fellows like Boyce from de Cyber Space Club ting and Stephen Williams from SunIsle en de nex fellow from de Information Society and Dr. Shorey to task bout inane programs Think Click Surf and de “reactive” litany of anachronistic programs dat dem does be pun TV promoting?

De ting is dat we does be critical uh Donkey talking bout Murica all de time en ting but de ole man gine say dis irrespective of all the time spent with, around or in these third world metropolises “we isnt yet learn nuffin from dem peeples, certainly nuffin dat is deserving uh our claim tuh independence!!”

Yes there are many Barbadians who have made excellent contributions to the progress of the twin island state; I met one from St John several years ago in his seventies with his Bajan accent prominently intact and successful in the construction industry who neither had a Bajan or Trini passport. I believe that Dr Rowley’s greatest tribute to his mentor could be the finalisation of a fishing agreement bringing an end to the impasse between the two nations once and for all.

  26. “I am so happy that Dr Rowley found a position in which he could utilise the services of Brian Lara.”

Pure political grandstanding. Perhaps if it were something sports related -notwithstanding the role he played in the indiscipline which reared its ugly head in the Caribbean game in recent times- I would understand.

So am I to understand Gabriel that all republicans are bad and all those from the party of slavery who did not even vote for the civil rights act are good. Be a little bit more balanced man.
