The following posted to BU blog Lisa Marshall – Retrenched Worker from the Transport Board by Concern Bajan

On the issue of discredit….can you recall some drivers of the Pelican Terminal went to the Nation to highlight issues of great concern, which not only impacted the workers but general public at large? The Marketing Manager tried to discredit these drivers in the same article, noting that drivers were issued with memo books, which they are to log any defects and have them repaired. She went on to say that if the drivers drove defective units it was solely there choice…..talk about discredit to peoples character.

Mr. Tony Marshall was a moderator on V.O.B call in program “Down to Brass Tacks” at the time…he took it on himself to go into TB, where the Quality Assurance Manager took him to the department – where Ms. Marshall was assigned, and showed him the memos of defects that was made by the drivers. he forgot to show him the ones that were torn to shreds on mornings and the unit issued to another driver, with the remark, “he would drive that”…..destruction of character.

The following sitting of parliament saw former transport minister Mr. Glyne Clarke, stating that many drivers came to him with complaints of being force to drive defective units for fear of victimization. Then minister Mr. John Boyce, in an effort to discredit the former minister, stated, and its a document of parliament, that the drivers are issued with memo books and he knows for a fact that they make many memos. Again, he too forgot to mention to parliament of many of the defects are repaired…. The issue I have with Mr. Clarke’s statements were, when he was minister the same thing was taking place and was never addressed…..even parliamentarians discredit each other.

The BWU once wrote a letter to the then GM of TB, which was in relation to drivers from the outside depots making memos for defects, and the units went to Weymouth, stood there for 2 to 3 days and came back with the very same defect…In response, the GM replied by way of a letter in which the very first paragraph stated, “its not the policy of the Management of the Transport Board to have defective buses on the road..” Yet when these drivers try to do their job in a professional way, the are branded by the same managers as not wanting to work….is this discredit to one’s character of hypocrisy of a person.

Everyday on the call-in programs, people try to discredit these workers, and not one of them have any idea what these workers go through on a daily basis on the job. Then people here try to defend the management for not paying workers their due BY LAW…they are the ones who made the law…these workers were retrenched on the 3rd of March, given letters stating the would be paid all outstanding monies by April 28 – not part of but all…It took workers to go to TB headquarters making noise to get funds the first week of September, with a promise to have the remainder by September 10. Today is September 11, the workers have not yet gotten the remainder…if this was a private company the government would be insisting that the workers be paid.

This is not about which political party you like, it about right and wrong.. In January when questioned by the media, the PM stated that the severance money is not a problem. The Minister of Finance, stated that the monies are there for the retrenched workers and they will be paid in a timely manner. If the monies were there in January, why is it an issue in September for people to be paid what is rightfully theirs,

I dare anyone from the TB to say I am lying about anything I post here….I will deal with the BWU when I am ready….there is a lot more to the TB retrenchment program….

You may in fact be a co conspirator..
For me Social Justice & Human rights are the most important. If you chose exercise your ego and test the waters so to speak,
that’s your choice. This government with its un timely justice is as I said to Caswell being examined by more powerful people.. ERANDA foundation and its links with social justice and Human rights interests from a family association as well international observations on my situation will help illuminate those un just.

I agree, getting justice for some appears like peddling a bike uphill backwards. As I’ve realised when the legal system here turns you bike round for you. First they test your pocket, then they test your patience, then they chat amongst themselves and do nothing, hoping you die or something, while holding all.
People like Simon Cowell have had a taste of it. So when he even suggests a boycott of investment, it’s is any genuine Bajans that we all feel pity for, because it is them and the youth that will have to foot these pending bills in future Tax’s, as these gangsters are investigate, I understand even their offshore accounts & funding are under investigation.
The time for honouring themselves will soon be at an end…

  4. Would someone please explore the concept of “corruption”. it’s an easy thing to assert but what do we mean by it? Life Changer this could be yours I think since you mention it often enough as something at the heart of Bajan society and, in particular, the legal system – a popular thing to assert I agree. You seem to have a personal grumble. Do you want to share its metes and bounds?..

Cf perhaps the idea of a body being incorrupt..
    .
Since you refer to first world countries, are you drawing a stark contrast between Barbados and the UK? How many unsolved murders are there in the UK? What of corruption in the legal system?

I have a concern or rather a fear that a bus would run off the road and kill people because the driver went to sleep at the wheel. You see, they sent home too many drivers and as a result some of those remaining have to double up, that is, work two shifts back to back. The money is good but some drivers only double up out of fear that they would be next on the firing line.

This is so true, however Caswell , you forgot to mention that there are some drivers who have ailments such as poor night vision and was only working day duties. These drivers are now working night duties also. There were drivers who was taken off the regular day duties on the road due to ailments and now back in the regular system. You are truly in safe hands with us.

I notice some thumbs down what I say about this issue, that is not a problem for me, it is the truth. Q.A at TB does not mean Quality Assurance, but rather Quantity Assurance. When you listen to the management they speak of availability (the number of units they got on the road any given morning), but ask them how many completes a full duty. There was a acting Terminal Manager at an outside depot, and to make himself look good. He went to town early a morning armed with a torchlight, hunt out the units assigned to that depot and informed the supervisor on duty to send the guys to town for the units. What the wrecker did not go to tow in, the mechanics went out to fix and the remainder was taken back to the yard by drivers due to defects. – Dare them to say I am lying.

I know of cases where drivers were sent from an outside depot to Warrens at Simpson Motors to collect units and continue to the terminal to work, others were sent to QCVM for units and then continue on some route to Bridgetown. Who from Q.A checked those units. Tell Ms. Forde deny this. Safety at TB is a mere joke.

Wasn’t there a case where a female driver collected a bus from Kendal Hill, after it was repaired, and by the time she got to Sheraton, the brake pressure disappeared?

  7. @ Colonel Buggy
Yes there was, and the resulting damage was four cars written off and three extensively damage.

  8. Time for action. Bus Drivers – tell people, if they see a green scarf on the dash -the bus is in good shape. A red one if the bus is crap….
When it is red – no one gets in and the driver goes at 10km for the whole route until it breaks down.

Or, “run over” a “piece of wood with nails” and get a couple of good flat tires.

Unfortunately the end result could be much more serious that just flat tyres,as I came across one morning on the ABC Highway.

What can we expect therefore from the new head of the BWU on these matters .? Will she show some grit and determination ?
The mere fact that she is a woman is a no no in my book. I have no idea of her abilities but already she seems to be shirking .Her pronouncement with reference to how she sees the work load and responsibilities of delegates is a sorry indication that She does not intend to give more than what is required to survive. No extra efforts on her part . Somebody else has to do it -the delegates. Typical Barbadian Female !!!
NO WOMAN SHOULD BE HEADING THE BWU- NONE-NOT ONE. A woman leading a Trade Union in Barbados. Friends and Foes alike ! It is not good ?

  16. Interesting comment from Morris Lee that some of their units are over 30 years old and support the case for the yellow bus owners to get get duty free concessions. It seems ironic a sector taxed to death should be given tax concessions.

  17. David

I am not so concern about the part of his speech where he made a case for tax concessions. I was more interested in the part about 98 or 99% of the minibuses being over 30 years old when you consider that the Transport Board does not get anything to last beyond five years.

Here is what Chairman Wilshire had to say on the matter of new buses for the TB:

Transport Board to Buy New Buses

    August 22, 2014

The Barbados Transport Board plans to buy up 110 new buses to supplement their over-worked and aging bus fleet, but board Chairman Anthony Wiltshire says money is tight and how many buses and when they are actually bought will depend on if and when the funds are available.
The board has published notices inviting expressions of interest for the supply of 110 buses comprising 40 small and 70 large buses.

Mr. Wiltshire says the board has an active fleet of between 160 and 190 buses in service daily and with breakdowns taking a toll on an already inadequate fleet, there’s a need to acquire more buses provided they can find the money to do s

  20. A local bus company has put the view that all buses needs can be supplied by Barbadian suppliers. True?

  21. I am all for local manufacturers building and supplying buses to the Transport Board, but over the years there has been two vital safety factors that have been overlooked by local manufacturers and the Ministry of Transport and Works, as well as the BNSI.
#1 The Tipping Angle test, where the, simulated loaded prototype is placed on an platform and raised on one side , to ascertain at what point the bus will start to overturn.

#2 The vehicle electrical system comprise an Earth Return system, as against the Chassis earth return system. This severely reduces the likelihood of an on board fire in the event on an accident.

    UCAL to down tools

    UCAL to down tools (FP)

    By TIM SLINGER | Wed, September 24, 2014 – 12:12 AM

United Commercial Autoworks Limited (UCAL) and the Transport Board are at loggerheads again.

This time, UCAL workers have pledged to down tools today in protest at the company not receiving monies to pay outstanding salaries and wages, which are due today.

The latest development followed a staff meeting yesterday, called by UCAL’s managing director Frederick Gittens, who said there were insufficient funds to pay the 100-odd workers.

When contacted for comment, Transport Board marketing manager Lynda Holder said: “I am going to advise you to contact Mr Gittens, who is managing director of UCAL, and would be better able to respond to that.”
