It seems obvious Minister Byer-Suckoo is handling this matter badly. Why allow this matter to spin out of control in an election period? To resort to a legal position is not worth it. Find a way to settle!

    Labour pains
Alicia Deane, former personal assistant to Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo (below left), is fighting for what she says is rightfully hers. (Picture by Ricardo Leacock.)

    By Dawne Parris | Sun, May 06, 2012 – 12:09 AM

The Minister responsible for protecting workers’ rights is now herself in the midst of a labour dispute that has the potential to end up in court.

Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo has been accused of firing her personal assistant (PA) Alicia Deane in December last year, after four years of service, without giving a reason and withholding the E-3 form (green paper) which she needs to claim unemployment benefits.

Deane, who said she has been a supporter of the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) for 26 years, has retained attorney at law Mia Mottley.

While Mottley said she preferred not to comment on legal matters in the Press, Deane told the SUNDAY SUN in an interview that the lawyer, who is also an Opposition Member of Parliament, had written to the minister in March, requesting a response within 14 days.

Read the full story in today’s SUNDAY SUN.

Take a trip to ellerton or surrounding areas and you will see her margin of victory eroded and overtaken. Bear in mind, she went up against a completely lightweight in Cupid Gill. By planning the dismissal, by paying the woman and truth be told by not hiring her in the first place. But that’s another story. This is May, this event happened in December, a careful candidate would have been on top this from day one. Sadly there aren’t many careful candidates nowadays.

Questions…1. Is this the new procedure to be adopted by other Govt depts when workers are displaced? No unemployment benefits to come to them? The previous govt introduce the unemployment benefit and it is written in the law, my reasoning would call it an entitlement. Is that being taken away from all govt workers now in addition to not receiving their salaries? Is this trending? Shame on you doc! Shame! I cry a burning shame! I would have to ask Dennis Clark about that! Better can be done.

I heard about this dismissal before Christmas last year. If Mrs Byer-Suckoo had reason to dismiss Ms Deane, all well and good but it was done callously, two days before Christmas. Could not Mrs Byer Suckoo dismissed her after Christmas? I thought that Dems were dear loving people who cared for the masses. Ms Deane has said that she is a diehard Dem, so this will blow away, Harry Husbands will make sure it does.

@prodigal son, how stupid of a comment could it be talking about Christmas? if a person deserves to be fired, they deserve to be fired, whether it xmas or their birthday. Are you really serious. As YOU and the other BLP supporters on this blog seem to jump right into a matter not knowing the facts. Ms. Deane was seemingly cautioned on several occasions before her final dismissal, as she was not doing her job up to scratch as well as several other incidents, until she was ultimately fired. The minister only hires and fires the Personal Assistant, but all monies are dealt with via the Cabinet Office. If you choose to say that you dont think it was a sensible political move, so be it, but you would obviously have to think what went through the minister’s mind to have to fire a person who is to handle all of his/her confidential information..Yuh think….

The reason is not the source of discussion. It’s the timing and inadequate political handling of the issue. IF she deserved firing, so be it. If she deserved firing on Xmas Eve, so be it. But an astute politician should be aware of the fallout of mismanagement of the issue, particularly if said politician is in statistical and electoral difficulty.

The substance of this matter probably makes it a non issue but the mistake Suckoo is making here is to underestimate the political impact. The longer this matter remains in the public domain, probably being manipulated by some, the more harm politically it is having on her campaign. If she or her advising can’t read such a simple outcome then she deserves to lose.

As the minister of labour she should have given a reason for the firing. To not do so open up anyone else to follow the minister example. What more grievous is the withholding of the unemployment form. These action carries fine which the minister should be force to pay for her action or who ever drop the ball in this case. further more after repeated writing to her she should have had the issue resolved. What this leads to is a minister show the rest of employer what they can get away with.

ABSOLUTELY THROUGH – Amazing what a short and convenient memory some people have. Who is the current leader of the BLP – the same one who ignored the people of St. George South and their then representative Louis Tull. Owen Arthur should be shame to show his face in St. George South as he used the politics of neglect to spite Louis Tull leading to Tull’s statement mentioned above.

Compare the work of the good doctor Esther in a few short years to the years of BLP neglect of the constituency. There is no way that any objective and fair person can say that the good doctor has not been working on behalf of her constituents.

The DLP brought Barbados to its economic and political knees starting in 1986 with the RICHIE HAYNES BACKRAISE BUDGET and give-aways that the Bree St. John led BLP had indicated the country could not afford.
By 1988 , Barrow was. Sandiford stuttered and Richie Haynes Bolted. The Budget of 1988 was described by Richie Haynes as A BACKSTREET ABORTION. In the 1991 election campaign at Eastmond Corner, Sandiford declared that the economy was batting like Sir Garfield Sobers, two weeks later gave away 33 million dollars to retired civil servants who disposed of the money on consumer durables and the country was pushed into a hole further with the 8 % salary

    David / Observing;

Two thirds of the campaigning period has expired and we are now into the straightaway. The manifestoes have been promised and it is expected that we will be soon hearing details of the various promises for the gullible and others from both sides. Judging from the talk so far it will be a battle between “money in all your pockets” against “privatisation will take the jobs in the private sector which we have protected so far”.

In addition, the DLP has indicated it will soon unleash its usual over the top disclosure campaign based on alleged infelicities in the opposition camp in a Big Bang propaganda explosion built up from its apparently ineffective concentration along the same lines in the campaign so far. It seems noteworthy that the BLP has not promised a similar big disclosure blitz but has been reading from documents and providing information on several infelicities in the opposite camp throughout the campaign so far. No one knows if either of these campaigns has been effective so far.

Comparative crowd analysis, generally historically of little value, re guaging the relative effectiveness of the campaigns seem to suggest that the BLP has been getting bigger crowds in their music led and non-music led meetings so far. If that is true, and I think that the crowds speak mainly to the size of the relative bases and not to eventual outcomes since they normally do not capture a significant number of the non-partisan voters, I would like to hazard a guess that it might indicate that the DLP base has declined somewhat from its heyday and that the 14 years of plenty has added to the BLP base while the 5 years of relative famine has detracted from a narrowing DLP base.

Again, if the BLP base exceeds or just barely equals the DLP base, then it is possible that we might be heading into an election where the unattached voters could spell havoc for the DLP consisting as they are likely to do of a large number of publics who could well have suffered significantly and cumulatively from many of the money extracting policies of the last five years and who might not buy the external environment rationale for all those policies.

I await two things to finalise my personal prediction of the likely election results; 1) the Wickham poll of this weekend or early next week and 2) Operation Big Bang, as if that fizzles or appears to be effective, will have some bearing, even if not as much as the DLP thinks, on the eventual outcome of the elections. But in this I remember DT’s putative IMF disclosures some years ago drawing a very large crowd but fizzling when the disclosures could not stand up to scrutiny.
