Barbados finds itself on a website labeled as a country generating the 6th highest output of garbage per capita in the world. Do we have a plan to implement a relevant waste management solution Dr. Denis Lowe?

William Duguid posted this video on his FB Page today. Our management systems arein decay.

I thought the leak on Deighton Road was bad.
    LOOK AT THIS
    A fountain of water wasted.
Literally MILLIONS of gallons of water.
We are going to have a major problem with amount of water lost.

  2. Btw the WTE plant is still an option being explored

  3. David

The studies have been done…..we know what to do….implementation deficit disorder…..no lotta long talk needed.

  4. @Vincent

We cant even collect garbage efficiently.

We cant maintain the heavy duty equipment used at the mangrove cell and have to resort to renting equipment at exorbitant cost like we have garbage compactors owned by the private sector.

    It is so depressing.

  5. David

Have you considered that that perceived inability might be purpose work aimed at the result you cited?

Remember, you have civil servants on other people’s payrolls.

  6. Confirmation that we are still very much a Third World country. What ever happened to our wannabe Singapore model ?
The Minister of the Environment who is holding a big position on some world environmental body, should hang his head in shame. So too, many of us Barbadians who sit back and allow this country to deteriorate , without kicking up a fuss and demanding what is rightfully ours,a healthy environment.
But Rihanna is going to sing the national anthem. An oversize Barbados flag is going to fly on the Garrison. The King is coming . We are unveiling a monument. We are spending $7Million plus, plus, plus.plus . What more can we ask for? We are like a pig in mud, pure pleasure.

  7. @Pacha

Some of it is corruption, lethargy, indifference, ignorance and a dysfunctional system.

  8. After loud and boisterous noises to the WTE plant by the opposition. The blp is at it agsin crying crocodile tears about barbados large volumes of garbage
My question to the blp .Where are your solutions and if you did not have any in the past why pretend to be so concern but then again as always political opportuism is your best defence

  9. A comedian once said if you really want a situation where Crime Does Not Pay, let Government go ahead and nationalise Crime. The same could be said about Centralising operations.
When the BWA, and its predecessor Water Works Department were decentralised, the operation appeared much smoother.
When private concessionaires were managing the omnibus system in Barbados, not only were operations much smoother, but the various bus companies were making a profit.
When the SSA ‘s predecessor were decentralised ,and garbage collection was carried out under the aegis of the Northern District Council, The Southern District Council, and the City, operations appeared to be much smoother.
Perhaps we need to spread our eggs in a couple of baskets.

IT IS AMAZING THAT IN THE PAST BARBADOS FUNCTIONED MUCH BETTER IN EVERY WAY THAN NOW 50 YEAR AFTER INDEPENDENCE AND FREE EDUCATION

  11. Denis Lowe needs to know why Barbados does not have an effective waste management programme. He also needs to tell the country why trucks were not bought by the SSA despite just over $4M was given by MOF in2014.

  12. This Waste Management Fiasco is deliberate to give credenece to the Waste To Energy. The norm is that one party signs off and the other political party has to build. SBRC and Ionics were both conceptualized by BLP and implemented by DLP.

Who will share in the finders fees? It’s hoped that we skin out the beneficial owners and their connections. Nothing less than international forensic audits will be accepted.

The Financial Crimes Unit and Financial Intelligence Unit have much work to do.

  13. AC, whats you cut of the finders fees on the WTE?

  14. Georgie Porgie October 23, 2016 at 9:45 PM #
Having the Education and not the aptitude, and the will to implement things ,and to see them through ,is one of our biggest post-independence failures. We continue to hammer square pegs into triangular holes.

  15. My question is not directed to the Minister of the Environment, but to the Prime Minister and people of Barbados.
Why is Dr Dennis Lowe still a Minister in the Barbados Government?
In any country with a government which truly cares for, and about, its people, this man would have been dumped long ago. Truly a disaster.

Alvin…here is the positive answer to you and Clare Cowan’s negative Cahill Scam and Bizzy’s “give me” scam.

  17. Shrinking the Technosphere is the title of a recent book by Russian-American author Dimitri Orlov. Anyone got a plan yet for recycling nano particles – hopefully before they get into our brain?

  18. all govt departments dysfunctional, from passport renewal, customs clearance, garbage, water, road repair.where, when will it end?no easy solutions
we need leaders who care about the country nad not their pocket books

  19. There is a simple solution to waste: reduce to near zero the packaging of produce and products; and pass the total cost of recycling onto the retailer.

I can testify that having spent three testing weeks in BIm that the littering problem is a national problem. In brief your average Bajan is an extremely nasty person.

  20. When private concessionaires were managing the omnibus system in Barbados, not only were operations much smoother, but the various bus companies were making a profit.

    {~_~}

Colonel, I am too young to know or remember, so in the spirit of Independence and all; why did Government take over the private buses? Were they making bundles of money at the time or were they happy Government was bailing them out?

  21. How you mean why is Dennis Lowe still a Minster in the Barbados Government?

He is a Minister because the other Dennis is still one, Esther is still one and the PM is still the Prime Minister.

A better question imho would be why is the DLP still ruining the country with impunity?

  22. Now that Denis Lowe has strenuously refuted that the government does NOT plan to privatize the SSA is it a case of reacting to public pressure?

What position will the yardfowls now take.

  23. David October 25, 2016 at 12:44 PM #

Chuckle…..did not the same individual imply that Cherry would never do work for the SSA……..QED

Too much pressure too close to elections. Lowelife better not hide and give the SSA away for any kickback from Bizzy “give me” Williams. ..

………none of them can be trusted, Lowe is probably holding out for a bigger bribe.

Dont they know at tge BWA that stagnant water not running through a pipe should be treated for water borne bacteria, the tank should be treared, don’t they treat pipe borne water, dont any of these BWA people care about a water borne epidemic.

So Lowe is saying Bizzy “give me” is being mischievous because Bizzy is the one jump in the newspapers talking about “give me this” and “give me that”, he would have had to hear the privatization talk from one of the sell out ministers in parliament.

    http://www.barbadostoday.bb/2016/10/26/its-rubbish-3/

“Leading off debate on a resolution on the Barbados Green Economy Scoping Study, he dismissed talk of privatization as nothing more than an attempt by some “to create mischief in the society” in an attempt to influence the public.

“They don’t know what they are talking about. They are just running their mouths all over the place like athletes without understanding or seeking to understand what the intention of the Government is. Let me repeat. There is no intention on the part of the Government to privatize the Sanitation Service Authority.”

  27. Minister Lowe stressed that citizens should take responsibity of the waste accumuluated

However govt must take control implementing those laws that are on the books adhering to compliance including stiff fines and penalties , the reality being that people not going to follow the rule of law unless govt show the were withal and seriousness in getting citizens to obey
Enough talk! do what is in the best interest of the country , The people would have no other choice but to fall in line when govt demonstrate the authority which it has been given by the full use of the law

    talk is cheap

ACs ya shitheads…… government did not complain when Bizzy “give me” attempted to take that authority and use of the law…AWAY from his slaves and sell outs for government ministers in parliament, them little boy them to the minorities, did not say a word…cha

  29. Good news for the people of St. Joseph. Water once again is filtering from their pipes Kudos to govt for tackling a long overdue problem which was neglected or disregarded by a previous administration known as the blp who now takes political pleasure in shedding crocodile tears for the people of ST. Joseph

  30. I have to say that things have much improved over the last 20 years, in that individuals, who once thought nothing of leaving picnic detritus abandoned or chucking Chefette stuff out the car window have become much more aware. You see a lot less personal littering. People are trying hard but struggling in the face of hopeless rubbish collection! It’s a nightmare! What’s the point of educating the public to be more aware when the services they pay for cannot fullfil their role?

  31. Was intrigued to listen to minister Lowe in parliament sounding off about how he had given instructions to see how his ministry can ’employ’ the use of certain energy devices.

  32. So we have 20M and the SSA will buy 17 trucks and build a workshop.

……….whatever became of those 15 trucks that were idenified as sanitation trucks in the port months ago?

………UCAL has a workshop, govt owes it money, govt has no money,so why not put the SSA workshop into UCAL even expand it a bit and let them do the maintenance as both fleets use heavy duty vehicles?
