NEW YORK CITY: Guyana’s Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, will on Saturday, January 16, 2016 launch his nation’s 50th Independence celebration in New York. […]

The elaborate ceremony will take place at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center; 153-10 Jamaica Ave, Queens, New York 11432. Dr. Rupert Roopnarine, Guyana’s Senior Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport & Chairman of the 50th Independence Commemoration Commission will accompany the Prime Minister.

Queens is home to one of the largest Guyanese communities in the United States. The ceremony will be attended by United States elected officials, CARICOM and other diplomats, sponsors, corporate leaders and the Guyanese Diaspora.

The star-studded event will feature Guyana’s Miss World 2015 contestant and winner of the Miss World talent contest, singer Lisa Punch; Guyanese singer, Sasha Wintz – British Virgin Islands Miss World 2015 contestant; Vocalist Cherry-ann Hislop; Soca Artists Adrian Dutchin and Jumo Primo, as well as Chutney singers Gopaul Mangalram and Joyce Urmila Harris. Guyanese-American Hip Hop Superstars Red Café and Ryan Leslie have also been invited to perform. There will also be performances from the Bethesda Healing Center Dance Ministry, God’s Battalion of Praise Youth Choir, Impressions Dance Theater and classical Indian dancers Nikita Persaud and Nadia Persaud. Singers, Anthony Alleyne is slated to sing the US National Anthem while Lenessa Alexander will sing the Guyana National Anthem.

Chairman of Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary Committee (New York), Rickford Burke, said in a statement Thursday that “The launch will be a harbinger that will set the tone for a spectacular Golden Jubilee Independence celebration from June 4 – 12, 2016 in New York City, to which Guyana’s President David Granger has been invited.” The New York celebration is expected to be the largest celebration outside of Guyana.

Burke said that the commemorative events in June will synergistically depict Guyana’s rich and diverse cultures, as well as its journey from independence to contemporary society. “I’m confident that our celebration will capture the hearts and minds of not only Guyanese, but friends and well wishers of Guyana, imbue Guyanese with an indelible sense of identity and rekindle national pride,” the committee’s chairman added.

The June 4 – 12, 2016 celebration includes an Interfaith Prayer Service, Unity Concert, Symposium, Art Exhibition, Day of Volunteerism, Investment Conference, UN Reception, Flag Raising Ceremony, Cultural Extravaganza, President’s Soccer Tournament and Youth Fun Day, State Dinner  and a grand finale Mashramani (Carnival) and parade at which President David Granger has been invited to address the Guyanese-American community.

Saturday’s launch ceremony will be streamed live on the Committee’s website: www.celebrateguyana50thinnyc.com as well as on www.oneguyanausa.com. The National Communications Network in Guyana is expected to cover the event live.

A press conference with Prime Minister Nagamootoo, Dr. Rupert Roopnarine, Guyanese diplomats, elected officials and the Committee’s leadership will be held just before the ceremony on Saturday, January 16 at 6:30 p.m. All media are invited. The organization’s website www.celebrateguyana50thinnyc.com, will also be launched on January 16, 2016.

Sponsors of the New York Celebration include Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), Fly Jamaica Airways and Caribbean Airlines.

    @Thanks David. Re the Guyana celebrations I read yesterday that they have partnered with CAL in their celebrations.     @David, thanks! It seems Guyana is using their celebrations in a smart way. It’s not just pomp and show but they are using it as a tool to promote Guyana as an attractive tourism and investment destination by both non-Guyanese and those of the Guyanese diaspora.     This is an initiative I would support because it has potential to bring tangible benefits through increased airlift and investment by the diaspora. What I won’t support is a frivolous waste of money on fetes and royal visits.

    Were I the elected group of non-performers called the government of Barbados, I would arrange for airline charters to bring home Barbadians from cities in the USA and UK where there are large Bajan populations for 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations. I would insist that in order to get a FREE return ticket, each person of voting age would have to be eligible and registered to vote in Barbados. After staging the greatest party of all time, paid for by the disgruntled taxpayers of Barbados, an election would be called (while our temporarily returning nationals are here) and the rest would be history – 5 more years of misery!

    Bajan love a fete. Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you die.

    Make money from the Royal visit.

    On a different note who observed the ‘ no comment’ given to the local media by Tony Maeshall in response to him not being able to live in the official residence. Why not just say – stay tuned to releases from the foreign department or GIS. Would such a comment be more diplomatique?

    “[Minister of Culture, the Hon Stephen Lashley] said police “were extremely concerned” about the elements of violence and gun play that have marred the St Philip Carnival and “marred part of the Christ Church Carnival last year”. We have taken that advice and will not have a Christ Church Carnival this year.”
