Students

I know that you would be surprised by receiving emails from me. […]

My name is Caswell Franklyn. I am a trade unionist representing your teacher, Mr. Wismar Gibson, who was unceremoniously kicked off the school’s premises by the Principal, Dr. David Browne, on Wednesday, November 18, 2015.

This message is intended to set the facts straight with respect to his absence from school since that date, and also to dispel some very disturbing untruths that are being circulated which students at your level would recognise for what they are. Mr. Gibson’s absence from school is not his fault. He is being punished for refusing to be bullied into doing the wrong thing.

1 – Prior to returning to Queen’s College in September 2014, Mr. Gibson worked in a vacant teaching post at Christ Church Foundation School. He applied and was interviewed for an advertised vacant teaching post at Queen’s College.

2 – He was hired during the summer vacation and started teaching at QC in September, 2014. In October after school started Mr. Gibson was presented with another temporary teaching contract to which he objected given that he was informed at the interview, by the chairman of the interviewing panel Mr. Nadur, that it was a permanent job. He wrote to the ministry that this was unacceptable and continued teaching for that entire school year. This year after teaching you for two months in this term, the school’s administration came back with another temporary contract. He refused to accept that temporary contract as well since it was not what he applied for.

3 – As a result, the school’s administration attempted to bully Mr. Gibson into accepting the contract which is illegal and unfair. You know Mr. Gibson encourages you to stand up for what is right – he did as he teaches. For defending himself, he was thrown off the compound like a common criminal by Dr. Browne. He did not throw the teacher who was carrying on a relationship with a student off the compound with such indecent haste.

4 – Mr. Gibson turned up for work on Wednesday, 18 November as normal; did registration and form prayers; and while going to teach a class at 9:00 a.m. was told to see the Principal immediately at which time he was told that he was being put off the premises by the Principal for refusing to accept an illegal contract. He was not even given the opportunity to say good bye to his students or to return corrected work to them; nor was the work he left for you given out.

5 – Mr. Gibson has an unblemished teaching career of fifteen years. He is the holder of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literatures in English and Linguistics, a Diploma in Education (Teaching of English), a Certificate in General Management and a Certificate in Industrial Relations (with Distinction).

6 – Mr. Gibson did not choose to be away from classes during this time. You are well aware that his attendance record is almost perfect. He did not miss any classes for the term, despite (for two years in a row) having an extremely high teaching timetable. You are well aware that even on occasions when he is ill, contrary to my advice, turns up and teaches your classes.

7 – You are well aware of the fact that every single class you have ever had with Mr. Gibson over the last two years was rewarding and productive. I am told by Mr. Gibson that 27 out of 29 of you received a grade 1 in English A last year after Mr. Gibson worked with you in fourth form. It is my understanding that no other fourth form has surpassed or equaled this record in the last examination cycle. I am also informed that 75 % of Mr. Gibson’s Communication Studies students scored a grade 1, compared to a school average of 43%. Maybe that is why he was not given a Communication Studies group this year. This temporarily appointed teacher’s results were making the permanently appointed ones look bad.

8 – You must use your reasoning skills to decide why it was so necessary to remove Mr. Gibson from a job he is very good at and loves to do. He did nothing wrong unless you consider standing up for your rights to be wrong. You should ask yourselves why you are being punished by being deprived of teaching because Mr. Gibson stood up to bullies, rather than take the advice of the Principal who suggested that he should lay low and let things work out. And to add insult to injury, they refused to pay Mr. Gibson his salary for this month.

9 – I hope this clarifies matters.

Yours is a simple common-sense suggestion, but we seem to have entered a period of idiocy – where every little issue is handled in the worse possible manner.

..First he is being victimised for daring to challenge shiite from officials.
..Then they take action against him when it is most disruptive to the children
..Now they find themselves confronted with Caswell – who is smarter than ALL of the jokers in the MoE put together…
All this could have been avoided if the matter was just handled PROFESSIONALLY from the start.

But here is the REAL joke…
When all is said and done – and the damages are assessed, the SAME shiite people, who f*ed up, will continue in place ….to f up another day.
Look sharp, it is probably the IDENTICAL jackasses who created the Alexandra debacle, the Combermere mess-up, and who will find some other shiite to f*** up next year early….

Are you beginning to grasp the concept of ‘brass bowlery’ yet?

    Disclaimer
    F*** = Frig

Bottolone is……the half-assed ministry official who falsely advertised the post in the first place, their fault, are making the problem they created, a vendetta against Mr. Gibson…..so typical.

Should read……ministry officials who falsely advertised the post AS PERMANENT, in the first place………

  4. Well Well…
It would have been ‘permanent’ if the ‘right’ person had been selected. Unfortunately, Mr Gibson has established enough of a good reputation as a teacher, that the competition (probably the likes of AC 🙂 ) CLEARLY could not be selected over him … (not by Dr. Browne who want scholarships for QC ) and that is when the shit hit the fan…
…when someone realised that a ‘NON-D’, who was suing the government too boot, was given the job…

Solution…. Change it to temporary – and send him packing next term.

Unexpected result: Up steps Caswell …and the dog dead…
    LOL ha ha ha
    Oh Shirttt!!

  5. I’m not sure why some of the people here have resorted to insulting Harrison College or Combermere because it is well known they simply cannot compete with QC. We simply have to pat them on the back and assure them that they may one day hope to transfer to QC for 6th form and experience proper education firsthand.

Now back to the topic of Mr.Gibson being so ungratefully and inappropriately axed from his job by Dr. David Browne. Mr. Gibson is one of the best teachers which has shown his skills at QC and was both very professional and pleasant in the way he did things unlike what the parents with…. ‘slower’ children who are writing in these comments would have you believe.

Now lemme get real with yall. David does do bare ****. I heard firsthand from students that he threatened to throw their 6th form applications in the garbage because of matters they were not even involved with. What kind of man needs to make all males in the school shave their facial hair so he can feel like the alpha male because he has none? And when Blenman was ******* someone’s child in the school he didn’t treat him like that. This is all complete ridiculousness if you ask me.

  6. Barbados and its education system have gone to the dogs. Utter wickedness the principal and the ministry of education have done to that teachers and his students. This from the DLP that wants us to believe they care about poor people and education. Damn hypocrites and charlatans! Why do such damage to people and their children? The young teacher will not let them mistreat him, he will excel at his job, he will not play their politics. And a black history lecturer coming from the working class is volunteering to be the tool used by these wicked people in a spiteful show of revenge and evil. NO WONDER THIS COUNTRY IS CREATING SO MUCH CRIME, SO MANY CRIMINALS, SO MANY THIEVES, RAPISTS, PAEDOPHILES – the powers that be like it so.

Keep on their ass Caswell, the whole of QC (and I heard the PTA too) are behind you!

  7. I just want this matter solved without student involvement. I believe this matter is one of political interference and the parties who created this mess need to work swiftly to bring an end to this matter in the student’s interest. All of this political involvement is ruing Barbados. Politicians are not doing what is in the best interest of the country but what is in the best interest of their friends and family.

  8. In my earlier post I meant the new principal at QC does not have the respect of students since she is trying too hard to be friendly and I felt Ms Montrose should have gotten the post since the students already know she is a no nonsense person.

The Bushman……they refuse to stop the perennial, party yardfowl crap for jobs, money, position etc, small wonder the island and governance has deteriorated below banana republic status.

  10. So people, where the rest of parents in this? Some classes that belonged to Mr. Gibson don’t have a teacher and they will write CXC exams soon. Why the stony silence?

  11. A good teacher is not necessarily a good person and the success of students or lack thereof cannot only be attributed to the teacher. The individual in question is a non-conformist who seeks to get his way at all cost. He finds it extremely difficult to work with adults and often bullies his students into doing what he wants them to do by threatening not to enter them for exams or having entered them for exams threatening not to correct their SBAs or enter marks. He has even threatened not to correct SBAs of students if they did not attend sessions he deliberately scheduled on days like Inter School Sports days. He has said some of the most slanderous things about senior management to studentsin one of the schools he taught at prior to this last assignment. He would bypass management at the school and call parents on matters that should be dealt with by management. Mr. Franklin needs to let the public know about the reports that have been made about the said individual in recent times. I applaud Dr. Browne for having the backbone to recommend the removal of this cancer from being involved in dealing with young impressionable children.

Lol I can’t help but laugh at your comment
I have kids who went to both hc and combermere and they did excellent multiple grade ones in various subjects in fact the one that went to combermere did better than the one that went to hc
So I will assure you that thereally is a good and bad teaching at all schools qc is no different from hc or combermere so please rethink your state of mind
I also hope that the qc issue is resolved soon for my friends daughter

  14. I am at a lost for words.

  15. I wonder if it would not have been better to leave some of these administrators, teachers, parents and students in the cane fields.

  16. I mean after all there is no point in throwing pearls before swine.

  17. Would these students who Mr. Gibson threatened not to correct their SBA’s be tge same students who handed in their SBA’s rather late?

  18. I must really confess that Mr. Gibson really used to annoy me calling my house nealry every day to ask my child about changing this or that in an sba but we were so glad when the results came back. He is a pusher and the kids appreciate it.

Any reason why the Nation would publish this story and not the disclosures arising from the Cahill agreements posted on BU? Not saying that this should not be given coverage.
