    Gentlemen. I greet you here on the bank of the James River in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and twelve. First, I shall thank you, the gentlemen of the Colony of Virginia, for bringing me here. I am here to help you solve some of your problems with slaves. Your invitation reached me on my modest plantation in the West Indies, where I have experimented with some of the newest, and still the oldest, methods for control of slaves. Ancient Rome would envy us if my program is implemented. As our boat sailed south on the James River, named for our illustrious King, whose version of the Bible we cherish, I saw enough to know that your problem is not unique. While Rome used cords of wood as crosses for standing human bodies along its highways in great numbers, you are here using the tree and the rope on occasions. I caught the whiff of a dead slave hanging from a tree, a couple miles back. You are not only losing valuable stock by hangings, you are having uprisings, slaves are running away, your crops are sometimes left in the fields too long for maximum profit, you suffer occasional fires, your animals are killed. Gentlemen, you know what your problems are; I do not need to elaborate. I am not here to enumerate your problems, I am here to introduce you to a method of solving them. In my bag here, I HAVE A FULL PROOF METHOD FOR CONTROLLING YOUR BLACK SLAVES. I guarantee every one of you that, if installed correctly, IT WILL CONTROL THE SLAVES FOR AT LEAST 300 HUNDREDS YEARS. My method is simple. Any member of your family or your overseer can use it. I HAVE OUTLINED A NUMBER OF DIFFERENCES AMONG THE SLAVES; AND I TAKE THESE DIFFERENCES AND MAKE THEM BIGGER. Now that you have a list of differences, I shall give you an outline of action, but before that, I shall assure you that DISTRUST IS STRONGER THAN TRUST AND ENVY STRONGER THAN ADULATION, RESPECT OR ADMIRATION. The Black slaves after receiving this indoctrination shall carry on and will become self-refueling and self-generating for HUNDREDS of years, maybe THOUSANDS. Don’t forget, you must pitch the OLD black male vs. the YOUNG black male, and the YOUNG black male against the OLD black male. You must use the DARK skin slaves vs. the LIGHT skin slaves, and the LIGHT skin slaves vs. the DARK skin slaves. You must use the FEMALE vs. the MALE, and the MALE vs. the FEMALE. You must also have white servants and overseers [who] distrust all Blacks. But it is NECESSARY THAT YOUR SLAVES TRUST AND DEPEND ON US. THEY MUST LOVE, RESPECT AND TRUST ONLY US. Gentlemen, these kits are your keys to control. Use them. Have your wives and children use them, never miss an opportunity.     LET’S MAKE A SLAVE

    It was the interest and business of slave holders to study human nature, and the slave nature in particular, with a view to practical results. I and many of them attained astonishing proficiency in this direction. They had to deal not with earth, wood and stone, but with men and, by every regard, they had for their own safety and prosperity they needed to know the material on which they were to work, conscious of the injustice and wrong they were every hour perpetuating and knowing what they themselves would do. Were they the victims of such wrongs? They were constantly looking for the first signs of the dreaded retribution. They watched therefore with skilled and practiced eyes, and learned to read with great accuracy, the state of mind and heart of the slave, through his sable face. Unusual sobriety, apparent abstractions, sullenness and indifference indeed, any mood out of the common was afforded ground for suspicion and inquiry. Frederick Douglas LET’S MAKE A SLAVE is a study of the scientific process of man-breaking and slave-making. It describes the rationale and results of the Anglo Saxons’ ideas and methods of insuring the master/slave relationship. LET’S MAKE A SLAVE “The Original and Development of a Social Being Called ‘The Negro.’” Let us make a slave. What do we need? Because she has become psychologically independent, she will train her FEMALE offsprings to be psychologically independent. What have you got? You’ve got the nigger WOMAN OUT FRONT AND THE nigger MAN BEHIND AND SCARED. This is a perfect situation of sound sleep and economics. Before the breaking process, we had to be alertly on guard at all times. Now, we can sleep soundly, for out of frozen fear his woman stands guard for us.     Earlier, we talked about the non-economic good of the horse and the nigger in their wild or natural state; we talked out the principle of breaking and tying them together for orderly production.     CONTROLLED LANGUAGE

For example, if you told a slave that he must perform in getting out “our crops” and he knows the language well, he would know that “our crops” didn’t mean “our crops” and the slavery system would break down, for he would relate on the basis of what “our crops” really meant. So you have to be careful in setting up the new language; for the slaves would soon be in your house, talking to you as “man to man” and that is death to our economic system. In addition, the definitions of words or terms are only a minute part of the process. Values are created and transported by communication through the body of the language. A total society has many interconnected value systems. All the values in the society have bridges of language to connect them for orderly working in the society. But for these language bridges, these many value systems would sharply clash and cause internal strife or civil war, the degree of the conflict being determined by the magnitude of the issues or relative opposing strength in whatever form. For example, if you put a slave in a hog pen and train him to live there and incorporate in him to value it as a way of life completely, the biggest problem you would have out of him is that he would worry you about provisions to keep the hog pen clean, or the same hog pen and make a slip and incorporate something in his language whereby he comes to value a house more than he does his hog pen, you got a problem. He will soon be in your house.Additional Note: “Henty Berry, speaking in the Virginia House of Delegates in 1832, described the situation as it existed in many parts of the South at this time: “We have, as far as possible, closed every avenue by which light may enter their (the slaves) minds. If we could extinguish the capacity to see the light, our work would be complete; they would then be on a level with the beasts of the field and we should be safe. This religious programmme is so powerful, that we have churches on practically every corner of this island, other islands, Africa, etc. We worship a book call the bible, which is entirely based on astrology, astronomy, and biology. We have been taught to worship the sun in the sky as the son jesus; the 12 zodiac signs as ‘his’ 12 diciples, and so on and so on. It is indescribably sad how otherwise seemingly critical thinking people can be so duped for so long, and seem to want to stay that way. They are programmed to worship the Sun, go to church on Sun-day, which is all based on so called paganism, which is really another word for being natural. But would tremble at the thought of being called a pagan.
    Sadly, I think we will always have people who gladly embrace the idea of wanting to be led and controlled.

  6. No need for all the Willie Lynch theory. Our education system does the same thing up to this day and we the parents go through it and accept what would be unacceptable in Europe or North America.

    From Primary school we accept a position in class according to our abilities. This nonsense of 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc in classrooms, is a known tool to damage the minds of children to accept a superiority or inferiority complex amongst each other. One of the most damaging things we can do to children is to have them compare themselves.

    We further entrench this damage by accepting and aspiring to have our children attend 1 of the 4 “top schools” and take the mickey by giving parents a choice of these schools before the children even sit the exam! What an affront to supposedly intelligent people! You are being given the choice to create social and personal division in your childrens minds. They still have the position in class rubbish on school reports in secondary schools!

    They then stuff it down your throat by saying if you don’t choose from the hierarchy, then your child will not get a place in secondary school and will have to pay for them to be educated outside of the direct system through a bursary or private school.

    What is hurtful is that so many parents accept it. Partly because they went through this system and they see no harm in their outcome, partly because parents are also educators and involved in the ministry of education and partly because this is all a part of the brainwashing that helps to perpetuate our poor man, inferiority, rich man superiority complexes.

    Their are many so called middle classed people who do not recognise themselves as poor.

    There is little difference between a slave and a servant. Both are ignorant of what freedom really is.

    He “owned” the Congo during his reign as the constitutional monarch of Belgium. After several failed colonial attempts in Asia and Africa, he settled on the Congo. He “bought” it and enslaved its people, turning the entire country into his own personal slave plantation. He disguised his “business transactions” as philanthropic and scientific efforts under the banner of the “International African Society”. He used their enslaved labor to extract Congolese resources and services. His reign was enforced through work camps, body mutilations, executions, torture, and his private army.

    Most of us – I don’t yet know an approximate percentage but I fear its extremely high – aren’t taught about him in school. We don’t hear about him in the media. He’s not part of the widely repeated narrative of oppression (which includes things like the Holocaust during World War II).
    He’s part of a long history of colonialism, imperialism, slavery and genocide of the African continent that would clash with the social construction of the white supremacist narrative in our schools. It doesn’t fit neatly into a curriculum which trains young white people to be, as my friend puts it, “little racists”. Its bad to “say racist things”, but quite fine not to talk about African genocides perpetrated by European capitalist monarchs.

    Stories which support the white supremacist narrative about the subhumanness of Africans are allowed to be entered into the records of history. The white guy who turned the Congo into his own personal part-plantation, part-concentration camp, part-Christian ministry and killed 10 to 15 million Conglese people in the process doesn’t make the cut.

    Slave mistresses were more popular in the main port Bridgetown because during the “hard season”between crops the estate owners began to “let” them “out” as prostitutes for cash in ever-increasing numbers to the ever-growing number of taverns in the ever-expanding maritime trade. A man called Cooper from the abolitionist lobby said the slave population did not achieve positive growth because of the prevalence of prostitution among young females – on the estates as well as in town

    A. Horton writes that sharpened by a keen sense of a male dominated society they “pro-actively”pursued prostitution. Edward Long, a defender of slavery stated that black women were born for it; that they were highly efficient performing sex machines without morals: “From their youth they are taught to be whores, and to expect their living to be derived from immoral earnings.” J. B. Moreton, in 1790, blamed their mothers who arranged the clients and received the money out of their daughters’ bodies.

    Colonel Hilton, a professional British soldier, saw a Creole white woman in the slave market examining the genitals of a slave. F.V. Bayley, and English travel writer of the 1820’s wrote about slave prostitution in Bridgetown as a highly organized institution that white Barbadian males considered socially indispensable.

    The Church of England has voted to apologise to the descendants of victims of the slave trade.
    An amendment “recognising the damage done” to those enslaved was backed overwhelmingly by the General Synod.

    Debating the motion, Rev Simon Bessant, from Pleckgate, Blackburn, described the Church’s involvement in the trade, saying: “We were at the heart of it.”

    The amendment was supported by Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and Archbishop of York John Sentamu.
    Dr Williams said the apology was “necessary”.

    He said: “The body of Christ is not just a body that exists at any one time, it exists across history and we therefore share the shame and the sinfulness of our predecessors and part of what we can do, with them and for them in the body of Christ, is prayer for acknowledgement of the failure that is part of us not just of some distant ‘them’.”

    Branding irons

    During an emotional meeting of the Church’s governing body in London, Rev Blessant explained the involvement of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts in the slave trade.

    The organisation owned the Codrington Plantation in Barbados, where slaves had the word “society” branded on their backs with a red-hot iron, he said.

    The synod passed a motion acknowledging the “dehumanising and shameful” consequences of slavery.

    It comes ahead of commemorations of the 200th anniversary of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, which will be marked next year.

    The debate heard from descendants of the slave trade including the Rev Nezlin Sterling, of Ealing, west London, who represents black churches. She told the synod that commemorations of the 200th anniversary would revive “painful issues and memories” for descendants.

    The apology comes after Dr Williams was criticised in November for saying that missionaries “sinned” by imposing hymns ancient and modern on places such as Africa.

To clarify, slavery in Britain was made illegal in 1772; the colonial slave trade was ended in 1807; slavery in the colonies was abolished in 1833.

    The Church of England last night said sorry for the role it played in the 18th century in benefiting from slave labour in the Caribbean.

    The church’s general synod in London began its deliberations yesterday by commemorating its role behind the abolition of slavery in 1807, pledging members to continue campaigning against modern slavery. But the debate was transformed at the request of the Archbishop of Canterbury, with an apology being issued for the church’s complicity in sustaining – and profiting hugely – from the trade.

    Although the motion was passed unanimously, the synod stopped short of endorsing a specific call for financial or other reparations.

    When parliament voted compensation in 1833 – to former slave owners rather than the slaves themselves – the church received £8,823 8s 9d, about £500,000 in today’s money, for the loss of slave labour on its Codrington plantation in Barbados. The contemporary Bishop of Exeter and his business associates received even more, nearly £13,000.

    Rowan Williams, the archbishop, told the synod that the church ought to acknowledge its corporate and ancestral guilt: “The Body of Christ is not just a body that exists at any one time; it exists across history and we therefore share the shame and the sinfulness of our predecessors, and part of what we can do, with them and for them in the Body of Christ, is prayerful acknowledgment of the failure that is part of us, not just of some distant ‘them’.

    “To speak here of repentance and apology is not words alone; it is part of our witness to the Gospel, to a world that needs to hear that the past must be faced and healed and cannot be ignored … by doing so we are actually discharging our responsibility to preach good news, not simply to look backwards in awkwardness and embarrassment, but to speak of the freedom we are given to face ourselves, including the unacceptable regions of … our history.”

    The church’s admission follows similar apologies by the late Pope John Paul II for the historic transgressions of the Roman Catholic church, its anti-semitism and the Inquisition.

    Speakers in the synod debate acknowledged that the church had played its part in justifying slavery during the long campaign by William Wilberforce and others such as the former slave ship captain turned minister John Newton, composer of the hymn Amazing Grace, to secure its abolition. Wilberforce brought bills before parliament for 20 successive years until legislation to abolish the trade was passed.

    The Rt Rev Tom Butler, Bishop of Southwark, told the synod: “The profits from the slave trade were part of the bedrock of our country’s industrial development. No one who was involved in running the business, financing it or benefiting from its products can say they had clean hands.

    THE ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE AND SLAVERY IN AMERICA
    In February, 2006, the Church of England apologized for its involvement in the slave trade and benefits derived from it. (48) Said the Guardian: “The Church of England last night said sorry for the role it played in the 18th century in benefiting from slave labour in the Caribbean. … Speakers in the synod debate acknowledged that the church had played its part in justifying slavery during the long campaign by William Wilberforce and others …” The Rt Rev Tom Butler, Bishop of Southwark, told the synod: “We know that bishops in the House of Lords with biblical authority voted against the abolition of the slave trade. We know that the church owned sugar plantations on the Codrington estates [where they also owned slaves. Codrington estates is in Barbados].” The Guardian also noted that “A recent book, Bury the Chains (51), by the American author Adam Hochschild, clearly influenced the debate. It says the church’s missionary organisation, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, branded its slaves on the chest with the word SOCIETY to show who they belonged to.”


  29. In the 1857 Dred Scott Decision, the U.S. Supreme Court Ruled That African Americans Could Never be Citizens :
    In a 7 to 2 ruling, they decided that African Americans could never be citizens because blacks “are not included, and were not intended to be included, under the word ‘citizens’ in the U.S. Constitution, and can therefore claim none of the rights and privileges which the instrument provides and secures to citizens of the United States. On the contrary, they were at that time [1787-88] considered as a subordinate and inferior class of beings who had been subjugated by the dominant race, and, whether emancipated or not, yet remained subject to their authority, and had no rights or privileges but such as those who held the power and Government might choose to grant them.” [as written by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney in his ‘opinion of the court’] (42), (45), (46) .

  30. Resolved, That the 75th General Convention of The Episcopal Church declare unequivocally that the institution of slavery in the United States and anywhere else in the world, based as it is on “ownership” of some persons by other persons, was and is a sin and a fundamental betrayal of the humanity of all persons who were involved, a sin that continues to plague our common life in the Church and our culture; and be it further

    Resolved, That The Episcopal Church acknowledge its history of participation in this sin and the deep and lasting injury which the institution of slavery and its aftermath have inflicted on society and on the Church; and be it further

    Resolved, That we express our most profound regret that (a) The Episcopal Church lent the institution of slavery its support and justification based on Scripture, and (b) after slavery was formally abolished, The Episcopal Church continued for at least a century to support de jure and de facto segregation and discrimination; and be it further

    Resolved, That The Episcopal Church apologize for its complicity in and the injury done by the institution of slavery and its aftermath; we repent of this sin and ask God’s grace and forgiveness; and be it further

    Resolved, That the 75th General Convention of The Episcopal Church through the Executive Council urgently initiate a comprehensive program and urge every Diocese to collect and document during the next triennium detailed information in its community on (a) the complicity of The Episcopal Church in the institution of slavery and in the subsequent history of segregation and discrimination and (b) the economic benefits The Episcopal Church derived from the institution of slavery; and direct the Committee on Anti-Racism to monitor this program and report to Executive Council each year by March 31 on the progress in each Diocese; and be it further

    Resolved, That to enable us as people of God to make a full, faithful and informed accounting of our history, the 75th General Convention of The Episcopal Church direct the Committee on Anti-Racism to study and report to Executive Council by March 31, 2008, which in turn will report to the 76th General Convention, on how the Church can be “the repairer of the breach” (Isaiah 58:12), both materially and relationally, and achieve the spiritual healing and reconciliation that will lead us to a new life in Christ; and be it further

    Resolved, That to mark the commencement of this program the Presiding Bishop is requested to name a Day of Repentance and on that day to hold a Service of Repentance at the National Cathedral, and each Diocese is requested to hold a similar service.

  31. Slavery and the Codrington Plantation

    The Plantation was bequeathed to the Society for Propogating the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG) in 1710 by Christopher Codrington and was run by managers on behalf of the Church of England, represented by the Archbishop of Canterbury and a committee of bishops. It relied on new slaves from West Africa: by 1740 four out of every 10 slaves bought by the plantation died within three years. This contrasted with some plantations in what is now the Southern USA, where the death rate was lower.
    Initially slaves were branded with the word “Society” on their chests with a hot iron.[4] Milton Meltzer explains that the branding practice throughout the sugar plantations was that “Already branded once by the trader, the slaves were branded a second time with their new owner’s initials.” On branding at Codrington, Hochschild says[5] “For nearly a decade, Codrington officials tried to reduce escapes by branding all slaves on their chests. In the end, though, the chief deterrent was the lash, plus, at times, an iron collar and a straitjacket.”
    It has been suggested that in there was a deliberate “work to death” policy in operation, as was commonly the case on other plantations and in South America.[6] On this question, Hochschild makes the point[7] …”in 1746 one third of Africans died within three years of arrival in West Indies, from the ordeal of the middle passage, and the shock of adjusting to the new life, foods, and diseases.”


  32. Church’s slavery apology ‘is not enough’

    Lisa Codrington knew her ancestors were Anglicans like her and that, almost two centuries ago, they were slaves. But she did not realise until recently that they were slaves of the Church of England.

    The clue is in her name: Codrington. Slaves of British planters often took the name of their masters and, until 1710, Miss Codrington’s forebears lived on the Codrington plantation in Barbados.
    After that date the Codrington lands, and the hundreds of slaves on them , became Church property.
    The Codrington slaves, men like Devonshire Codrington, born in 1776 and Lisa’s many-times great-grandfather, did not become free until 1834, when the Church, like all slave-owners, was forced to release them.
    Anglican culpability in the Caribbean slave trade can be traced back at least to 1710, when the planter Christopher Codrington died, leaving his 800-acre Barbados plantations to the Church’s newly-established Society for the Propagation of the Christian Religion in Foreign Parts (SPG).So Miss Codrington and her family are well-placed to comment on the Church’s apology. “It’s a good start,” said the 28-year-old actress and playwright, who was born in Winnipeg, Canada, of Barbadian parents and now works as an actress in Toronto.

    “But is that all? I don’t know how I feel about the apology until I hear everything about it. Is it involving reparation? Is it involving further work, further education by the Church?”
